Concept and scope definition
The EN 50169-1 sets the european standards for electrical equipment apply to the installation of the electrical part of boilers; The analysis of risks associated with electrical equipment, specifically those connected to a potential hazard, must be conducted as an integral part of the overall assessment of the boiler. It is essential that this risk evaluation be performed in a specific manner for each individual situation.
Environmental requirements: General
The corrispondent electrical equipment shall be selected and mounted in order to whitstand the potential electrical, chemical, thermal and mechanical stresses at its place of use as well as external influences.
Environmental and operating conditions
The equipment need to be suitable for the use and environment conditions it is desinged for; An agreement between the supplier and the user is needed, if the environmental and operating conditions are outside those specified below.
Electromagnetic compatibility – Emission requirements
The equipment could generate electrical interference, if it does, the E.F. generated by it shoud not exceed levels specified in the relevant equipment standard and other standards with electromagnetic compatibility (EMC).
The issue of EMC compatibility is that there is no specific standard that indicates the emission or immunity limits. That is why, generic standards are used.
Electrical compatibility – immunity requirements
Testing procedures and setup must comply with the relevant parts of the EN 6100-4 series of standards, with tests performed at a minimum of severity level 3. The equipment should be tested at its rated voltage during all operating conditions: standby, running, and lock-out. Higher EMC levels may be necessary depending on the environment, and these should be pre-defined between the manufacturer and the test facility, referencing EN IEC 6100-6-4-2019. Finally, EN 6100-6-7:2015 must be considered for functional safety requirements.
Safety related functions
When the equipment is tested for EMC, more specifically for immunity requirements, safety relevant functions shall remain operational in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications.
ISO 13849-1: 2023 has a new annex that can help in this (Annex L).
