The long-term success of UL 508A depended heavily on consistent technical interpretation and enforcement.

Over the years, several principal engineers played central roles in interpreting requirements, maintaining consistency, supporting field representatives, and guiding technical development activities associated with industrial control panels.

Among the UL engineers publicly associated with UL 508A technical leadership and interpretation activities are individuals such as Chuck Goetz, John Kovacik, and Peter Hoogerdijk. All have served as UL’s Principal Engineer for UL 508A. They have participated extensively in training, interpretation activities, technical presentations, and industry education related to UL 508A. Peter is the current Principal Engineer taking over the role from John at the end of 2022.

The technical leadership associated with UL 508A has historically been important because the standard governs highly customized equipment configurations.
