Today, UL 508A remains the dominant North American standard governing industrial control panel construction.
The standard continues to evolve in response to:

Modern industrial control panels are substantially more complex than those evaluated during the 1970s when the program first began.
Yet the core mission of UL 508A remains fundamentally unchanged: to provide a practical and technically sound framework for evaluating the electrical safety of industrial control panels.
The standard’s success demonstrates how a local code enforcement problem identified by the City of Chicago eventually grew into one of the most influential industrial electrical safety standards in the world.
