Associated safety device

If a safety device isn’t designed for a specific equipment, it can be assessed independently; safety integrity and other parameters  associated to safety, as well as the interface to the Ex equipment shall be specified in the instruction of the Ex equipment itself.

The safety device and the associated equipment is to be considered as Ex Equipment, and it needs to be assessed according to the relative table, shown in the previous page.

As an example, there are motors under the control of a Variable speed drive that need an overtemperature control. That can be achieved with a SIL rated safety electronic device, inside the cotrol panel in the safe area, and a Thermocouple inside the motor and connected to the safety device.
