\u00e9lectrique les plus influentes et les plus largement utilis\u00e9es en Am\u00e9rique du Nord. Elle r\u00e9git la conception des panneaux de commande industriels utilis\u00e9s dans la fabrication, la transformation, l&rsquo;automatisation, les syst\u00e8mes CVC, les syst\u00e8mes de pompage, les \u00e9quipements de manutention et d&rsquo;innombrables autres applications industrielles. Aujourd&rsquo;hui, la norme UL 508A est reconnue par les fabricants, les inspecteurs en \u00e9lectricit\u00e9, les ing\u00e9nieurs-conseils, les utilisateurs finaux et les autorit\u00e9s comp\u00e9tentes (AHJ) comme la r\u00e9f\u00e9rence principale pour \u00e9valuer la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 des panneaux de commande industriels.<\/p>\n<p>L&rsquo;histoire de la norme UL 508A est particuli\u00e8rement significative car elle illustre comment des probl\u00e8mes pratiques sur le terrain, des pr\u00e9occupations li\u00e9es \u00e0 l&rsquo;application des codes locaux et la demande industrielle peuvent conduire \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e9laboration d&rsquo;un programme de certification enti\u00e8rement nouveau. Les composants individuels \u00e0 l&rsquo;int\u00e9rieur des panneaux \u2014 tels que les d\u00e9marreurs de moteur, les relais d&rsquo; , les sectionneurs, les boutons-poussoirs, les minuteries et les transformateurs \u2014 pouvaient \u00eatre homologu\u00e9s UL ou reconnus par UL, mais le panneau en tant qu&rsquo;ensemble complet ne disposait g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement d&rsquo;aucune certification globale.<\/p>\n<p>Cette situation posait des difficult\u00e9s aux inspecteurs en \u00e9lectricit\u00e9. Les responsables locaux charg\u00e9s de l&rsquo;application des codes avaient besoin d&rsquo;une m\u00e9thode coh\u00e9rente pour \u00e9valuer la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 \u00e9lectrique des panneaux de commande industriels, en particulier lorsque l&rsquo;\u00e9quipement \u00e9tait fabriqu\u00e9 sur mesure et ne disposait pas d&rsquo;une homologation officielle.<\/p>\n<p>La personne la plus souvent associ\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019initiative de la cr\u00e9ation d\u2019un programme d\u2019\u00e9valuation des panneaux de commande industriels \u00e9tait William Hogan, inspecteur en chef de l\u2019\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 de la ville de Chicago. Hogan avait compris que les inspecteurs avaient besoin d\u2019une m\u00e9thode pratique et techniquement solide pour \u00e9valuer les panneaux de commande industriels qui ne disposaient pas d\u2019une certification compl\u00e8te en tant qu\u2019ensembles finis.<\/p>\n<p>Au d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 1970, la ville de Chicago a contact\u00e9 Underwriters Laboratories et lui a demand\u00e9 de d\u00e9velopper un programme permettant d\u2019\u00e9valuer la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 \u00e9lectrique des panneaux de commande industriels. Cette demande a jet\u00e9 les bases de ce qui allait finalement devenir la norme UL 508A.<\/p>\n<p>Cette demande rev\u00eatait une importance particuli\u00e8re, car Chicago appliquait depuis longtemps l\u2019un des environnements d\u2019inspection \u00e9lectrique les plus rigoureux des \u00c9tats-Unis. Un programme accept\u00e9 \u00e0 Chicago \u00e9tait susceptible de gagner en cr\u00e9dibilit\u00e9 dans d\u2019autres juridictions \u00e9galement.<\/p>\n<\/div>            <\/div>\n        \n    <p>Les premi\u00e8res exigences utilis\u00e9es pour \u00e9valuer les panneaux de commande industriels \u00e9taient \u00e9tonnamment informelles selon les normes actuelles. D\u2019apr\u00e8s les t\u00e9moignages historiques de personnes famili\u00e8res avec le d\u00e9veloppement du programme, les premi\u00e8res exigences consistaient en grande partie en des notes manuscrites r\u00e9dig\u00e9es par un ing\u00e9nieur \u00e9lectricien d\u2019UL.<\/p>\n<p>Plut\u00f4t que de cr\u00e9er une philosophie de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 enti\u00e8rement nouvelle \u00e0 partir de z\u00e9ro, l\u2019ing\u00e9nieur s\u2019est largement appuy\u00e9 sur les exigences existantes de la norme UL 508, la norme \u00e9tablie de longue date pour les \u00e9quipements de commande industrielle. La norme UL 508 traitait d\u00e9j\u00e0 de nombreux principes de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 \u00e9lectrique pertinents pour les dispositifs de commande industrielle, notamment les exigences d\u2019espacement, le dimensionnement des conducteurs, la protection contre les surintensit\u00e9s, l\u2019ad\u00e9quation des composants, la mise \u00e0 la terre et les pratiques de construction. L\u2019ing\u00e9nieur a \u00e9galement emprunt\u00e9 des exigences au Code national de l\u2019\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 (NEC) en vigueur \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque.<\/p>\n<p>L&rsquo;ing\u00e9nieur a adapt\u00e9 ces exigences \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e9valuation de panneaux de commande industriels complets.<\/p>\n<p>Comme ces exigences figuraient dans des documents internes informels plut\u00f4t que dans des normes publi\u00e9es, elles ont \u00e9t\u00e9 surnomm\u00e9es dans l\u2019industrie \u00ab norme de tiroir de bureau \u00bb. Ce nom refl\u00e9tait le fait que les crit\u00e8res d\u2019\u00e9valuation \u00e9taient litt\u00e9ralement rang\u00e9s dans les tiroirs des ing\u00e9nieurs et n\u2019\u00e9taient pas des documents distribu\u00e9s au public.<\/p>\n<p>Malgr\u00e9 son caract\u00e8re non officiel, la norme du tiroir s\u2019est av\u00e9r\u00e9e extr\u00eamement pr\u00e9cieuse.
