text-align:justify\"><strong><span style=\"text-align:justify;\">Controlling the effects of random hardware failures and <\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin:0cm 0cm 8pt 36pt; text-align:justify\"><strong><span style=\"text-align:justify;\">Avoiding or controlling systematic failures. <\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"text-align:justify;\">The activity can be summarized in the following four parts: <\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:lower-alpha\">\n<li style=\"margin:0cm 0cm 0cm 36pt; text-align:justify\"><span style=\"text-align:justify;\"><strong>Select devices appropriately<\/strong>, based on prior use or in accordance with IEC 61508.&nbsp; <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin:0cm 0cm 0cm 36pt; text-align:justify\"><span style=\"text-align:justify;\"><strong>Ensure minimum redundancy determined by HFT,<\/strong> either in accordance with the process sector approach, defined in IEC 61511-1, or in IEC 61508 <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin:0cm 0cm 0cm 36pt; text-align:justify\"><span style=\"text-align:justify;\"><strong>Design the architecture and application program<\/strong> to meet the requirements of the Safety Requirements Specification and verify that the specified performance objectives for Integrity, Reliability, and Systematic error control have been met; including aspects such as human capabilities, bypass management, diagnostic coverage, common cause failures, Proof Test interval, MTTR, etc.&nbsp; <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin:0cm 0cm 8pt 36pt;
