The latest edition of\u00a0<strong data-start=\"314\" data-end=\"332\">EN ISO 13577-4<\/strong>\u00a0was published in July 2022. GT Engineering actively participated in its development, making a significant contribution to the\u00a0<strong data-start=\"459\" data-end=\"480\">Functional Safety<\/strong>\u00a0section.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"491\" data-end=\"833\">The new edition of\u00a0<strong data-start=\"510\" data-end=\"528\">EN ISO 13577-2<\/strong>\u00a0followed in 2023. By June 2024, all national editions of\u00a0<strong data-start=\"586\" data-end=\"598\">EN 746-2<\/strong>\u00a0(including those of Italy, the UK, France, Spain, and others) were officially withdrawn. As a result,\u00a0<strong data-start=\"701\" data-end=\"719\">EN ISO 13577-2<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong data-start=\"724\" data-end=\"742\">EN ISO 13577-4<\/strong>\u00a0are now the sole reference standards for the safe design of industrial furnaces in Europe.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm; margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\">EN ISO 13577 consists of the following parts, under the general title Industrial furnaces and associated processing equipment \u2014 Safety:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: square;\">\n<li style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0cm 36pt;\"><strong><span style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\">Part 1: General requirements<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0cm 36pt;\"><strong><span style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\">Part 2: Combustion and fuel handling systems<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0cm 36pt;\"><strong><span style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\">Part 3: Generation and use of protective and reactive atmosphere gases<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt 36pt;\"><strong><span style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\">Part 4: Protective systems<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\">The acronym used in the standard to indicate industrial furnaces and associated processing equipment was IThE (EN 746-2) and it is now TPE. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\">What are the main changes compared to the 2014 edition of EN ISO 13577-4?<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt 36pt;\"><span style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\">It was made clear that the <strong>EN<\/strong> <strong>ISO 13577 series is not applicable to Petrochemical furnaces<\/strong>. EN 7462 mentions, as examples of IThE (Annex A), several types of furnaces in the chemical\/petrochemical industry. In the new edition of EN ISO 13577-2 it is stated: <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\">[EN ISO 13577-4: 2022] 1 Scope<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\">[\u2026] This document is not applicable to blast furnaces, converters (in steel plants), boilers, fired heaters (including reformer furnaces) in the petrochemical and chemical industries.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\">&#8211; <strong>EN 746-2<\/strong> allows the use of instrumentation, <strong>non SIL certified<\/strong>, to take case of the furnace Safety. That is detailed in<strong> chapter 5.7 of EN 746-2<\/strong> and it<strong> is derived from Method A of EN ISO 13577-4<\/strong>. The approach is kept in Iso 13577-4: 2022 edition, as well. <strong>In case some of the components, SIL certified, are used for the Furnace Safety, that is known as \u201cMethod B\u201d or Method \u201cC\u201d<\/strong>. Since the differences between the two method were small, in the new edition of EN ISO 13577-4, <strong>Method B and Method C were combined in one called Method BC<\/strong>. That approach is used every time either the input subsystem, or the logic or the output subsystems are SIL certified. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\">The principles of the three methods (A, BC, or D) are hereafter summarised:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><strong>&#8211; Method A:<\/strong> wired system, all devices comply with relevant product standards; SIL- \/ PL-calculation is not required;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><strong>&#8211; Method BC:<\/strong> combination of devices meeting relevant product standards with devices for which no relevant product standard exits. Therefore,<strong> Annex E has been significantly modified to reflect the approach by Subsystems and Subfunctions<\/strong>, now widely established in both ISO 13849-1 and IEC 62061. The first part of Annex E shows several examples of how to implement an input subsystem with either Method A or Method BC. The same approach is shown for the Logic and for the Output Subsystem.<br \/>\nOn that basis, the examples present in the 2014 edition of EN ISO 13577-4 were redrawn and may were made new, <strong>highlighting the new approach by subfunctions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0<span style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Annex B and Annex F<\/strong> were merged and a clearer language with better examples are now present in the revised Annex.<br \/>\nThe Annex makes it clear that the furnace electrical installation must comply with <strong>IEC 60204-1:2016<\/strong>. It describes how to wire the protective system so as not to reduce the level of safety and it applies to the wiring within the logic solver, and the wiring between the logic solver and the devices that directly or indirectly control the final elements. <strong>Moreover, it applies to the field wiring like sensors, interlocks, actuators, final elements, flame detector, igniter, etc.<\/strong><br \/>\nTo maintain the level of safety of the wired protective system,<strong> techniques shall be applied to avoid or prevent the introduction of systematic faults during design <\/strong>and development and to apply design features (e.g. selfchecking, redundancy) to control both random and systematic faults during operation.<br \/>\nPicture hereafter shows how to connect two pressure
