This is often noticeable because a separate, clearly visible PE conductor is connected directly to the motor frame. In addition to this, there is usually another PE conductor integrated within the supply cable (alongside the three phase conductors), which is connected inside the motor terminal box.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"611\" data-end=\"656\">In summary, the motor has two bonding points:<\/p>\n<ol data-start=\"658\" data-end=\"842\">\n<li data-start=\"658\" data-end=\"753\">\n<p data-start=\"661\" data-end=\"753\"><strong data-start=\"661\" data-end=\"681\">Internal bonding<\/strong> \u2013 via the PE conductor within the terminal box (from the power cable)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"754\" data-end=\"842\">\n<p data-start=\"757\" data-end=\"842\"><strong data-start=\"757\" data-end=\"777\">External bonding<\/strong> \u2013 via an additional, visible PE conductor connected to the frame<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3 data-start=\"844\" data-end=\"858\">Question<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"859\" data-end=\"989\">Is this double bonding mandatory according to standards (e.g. IEC 60364, IEC 60204-1), or is it just an additional safety measure?<\/p>\n<\/div>            <\/div>\n        \n        \n                <div class=\"clear-both\"><\/div>\n        \n\n    <\/div>\n        <\/section>\n\n    \n\n\n\n\n    \n        <section\n            data-name=\"Contenuto testuale con immagine\"\n            class=\"bow-gte-testo-media u-spacer-base\"\n            id=\"\"\n        >\n            \n<div class=\"o-text-media px-side-spacer sm:px-side-spacer-sm lg:px-side-spacer-tablet 2xl:px-side-spacer-desktop flex flex-wrap items-start md:block\">\n\n    \n                    <div class=\"mb-6 relative w-full md:mb-4 lg:mb-8 xl:mb-9\">\n                \n        <div                class=\"m-headings\"\n            >\n    \n    \n<h2 class=\"a-heading text-primary font-heading text-2xl lg:text-3xl xl:text-4xl font-normal mt-2 first:mt-0\">\n                    First Consideration    <\/h2>\n        <\/div>\n                <\/div>\n        \n        \n                    <div class=\"relative w-full\">\n                \n<div class=\"a-text font-text text-base normal mt-8 first:mt-0 space-y-4\">\n    <p data-start=\"137\" data-end=\"402\">The starting point is the <strong data-start=\"163\" data-end=\"224\">foundation of all low-voltage electrical safety standards<\/strong>: <strong data-start=\"226\" data-end=\"244\">IEC 60364-4-41<\/strong>. This standard sets the fundamental requirements for <strong data-start=\"298\" data-end=\"318\">fault protection<\/strong>, which is the modern terminology replacing \u201cprotection against indirect contact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"404\" data-end=\"783\"><strong data-start=\"404\" data-end=\"424\">Fault protection<\/strong> refers to protective measures implemented to prevent electric shock in the event of an insulation fault, where exposed-conductive-parts (such as the metal frame of an electric motor) may become live. IEC 60364-4-41 defines how these parts must be connected to the protective earthing system to ensure automatic disconnection of supply under fault conditions.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[IEC 60364-4-41: 2005] <em>410.3.4 Generally, the following protective measures may be applied: <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2013 automatic disconnection of supply (Clause 411), <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2013 double or reinforced insulation (Clause 412), <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2013 electrical separation for the supply of one item of current-using equipment (Clause 413), <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2013 SELV systems (Clause 414), <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8211; PELV systems (Clause 414) <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"130\" data-end=\"294\">The most widely used method for protection against indirect contact is <strong data-start=\"201\" data-end=\"244\">Automatic Disconnection of Supply (ADS)<\/strong>. This method requires two fundamental conditions:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"296\" data-end=\"485\">\n<li data-start=\"296\" data-end=\"343\">\n<p data-start=\"298\" data-end=\"343\"><strong data-start=\"298\" data-end=\"341\">Bonding of all exposed-conductive-parts<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"344\" data-end=\"485\">\n<p data-start=\"346\" data-end=\"485\"><strong data-start=\"346\" data-end=\"369\">A protective device<\/strong> (such as an MCB or fuse) capable of disconnecting the supply within a defined disconnection time in case of a fault<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"487\" data-end=\"833\">For electric motors, the bonding of the frame is normally achieved through a <strong data-start=\"564\" data-end=\"606\">single protective earthing (PE) conductor<\/strong> connected to the <strong data-start=\"624\" data-end=\"675\">earthing terminal inside the motor terminal box<\/strong>. This ensures that any fault current will flow back to the source through the PE conductor, enabling automatic disconnection.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"835\" data-end=\"1083\">There is <strong data-start=\"844\" data-end=\"880\">no requirement in IEC 60364-4-41<\/strong> to add a second external PE conductor to the frame. The internal PE connection is sufficient to meet the fault protection requirements\u2014as long as continuity and proper conductor sizing are ensured.<\/p>\n<\/div>            <\/div>\n        \n        \n                <div class=\"clear-both\"><\/div>\n        \n\n    <\/div>\n        <\/section>\n\n    \n\n\n\n\n    \n        <section\n            data-name=\"Contenuto testuale con immagine\"\n            class=\"bow-gte-testo-media u-spacer-base\"\n            id=\"\"\n        >\n            \n<div class=\"o-text-media px-side-spacer sm:px-side-spacer-sm lg:px-side-spacer-tablet 2xl:px-side-spacer-desktop flex flex-wrap items-start md:block\">\n\n    \n                    <div class=\"mb-6 relative w-full md:mb-4 lg:mb-8 xl:mb-9\">\n                \n        <div                class=\"m-headings\"\n            >\n    \n    \n<h2 class=\"a-heading text-primary font-heading text-2xl lg:text-3xl xl:text-4xl font-normal mt-2 first:mt-0\">\n                    Second Consideration    <\/h2>\n        <\/div>\n                <\/div>\n        \n        \n                    <div class=\"relative w-full\">\n                \n<div class=\"a-text font-text text-base normal mt-8 first:mt-0 space-y-4\">\n    <p>But why, then, some motors come with a second terminal? That is because in the IEC 60034-1: <em>Rotating electrical machines &#8211; Part 1: Rating and performance<\/em>, the following language is present:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[IEC 60034-1: 2022] <em>11.1 Protective earthing of machines<\/em><\/p>\n<p>[\u2026] <em>In the case of machines having rated voltages greater than AC 50 V or DC 120 V, but not exceeding AC 1 000 V or DC 1 500 V, the terminal for the earthing conductor shall be situated in the vicinity of the terminals for the line conductors, being placed in the terminal box, if one is provided. Machines having rated outputs in excess of 100 kW (or kVA) <u>shall have in addition an earthing terminal fitted on the frame<\/u><\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The reason is to make it easier to connect a PE cable, or, if the user wants, to create a second fault loop. <strong>However, neither IEC 60364-4-41 nor IEC 60204-1 require that second fault loop.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>            <\/div>\n        \n        \n                <div class=\"clear-both\"><\/div>\n        \n\n    <\/div>\n        <\/section>\n\n    \n\n\n\n\n    \n        <section\n            data-name=\"Contenuto font-text text-base normal mt-8 first:mt-0 space-y-4\">\n    <p data-start=\"114\" data-end=\"396\">Although some motors are equipped with <strong data-start=\"153\" data-end=\"178\">two PE terminals<\/strong>\u2014one inside the terminal box and another directly on the frame\u2014for <strong data-start=\"245\" data-end=\"274\">fault protection purposes<\/strong>, it is sufficient to connect the <strong data-start=\"308\" data-end=\"332\">internal PE terminal<\/strong> (inside the terminal box) to a protective earthing (PE) conductor.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"398\" data-end=\"656\">There is <strong data-start=\"407\" data-end=\"435\">no normative requirement<\/strong> in IEC 60364 series to additionally connect the external frame terminal with a second bonding conductor (often referred to as an <em data-start=\"593\" data-end=\"624\">equipment grounding conductor<\/em> in North American terminology).<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"658\" data-end=\"1059\">Therefore, if a motor is supplied only with an internal earthing provision inside its terminal box, this single connection fully satisfies the requirements for fault protection. A second PE conductor applied directly to the motor frame\u2014such as the one shown in the picture\u2014is <strong data-start=\"939\" data-end=\"968\">not mandated by any standards<\/strong>, but rather an optional measure, sometimes added for redundancy.<\/p>\n<\/div>            <\/div>\n        \n        \n                <div class=\"clear-both\"><\/div>\n        \n\n    <\/div>\n        <\/section>\n\n    \n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE DOUBT<\/p>\n<p>We sometimes notice electric motors having a double bonding.
