Is the motor frame grounded or bonded?<\/p>\n<p>Why the Protective Earth (PE) conductor is called Equipment Grounding Conductor (EGC) in USA?<\/p>\n<p>Those are excellent questions that we try\u00a0to answer.<\/p>\n<\/div>            <\/div>\n        \n        \n                <div class=\"clear-both\"><\/div>\n        \n\n    <\/div>\n        <\/section>\n\n    \n\n\n\n\n    \n        <section\n            data-name=\"Contenuto testuale con immagine\"\n            class=\"bow-gte-testo-media u-spacer-base\"\n            id=\"\"\n        >\n            \n<div class=\"o-text-media px-side-spacer sm:px-side-spacer-sm lg:px-side-spacer-tablet 2xl:px-side-spacer-desktop flex flex-wrap items-start md:block\">\n\n    \n        \n        \n                    <div class=\"relative w-full\">\n                \n<div class=\"a-text font-text text-base normal mt-8 first:mt-0 space-y-4\">\n    <p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>CONSIDERATION 1: Earthing<\/strong> and <strong>Grounding<\/strong> are synonyms and they mean to <strong>connect a metal part to earth<\/strong>, meaning to the \u201cdirty ground\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As an example, in a TN or TT system, the neutral point of a MV\/LV transformer is grounded (earthed). In the drawing an example of a TN system: the resistance R<sub>N<\/sub> is the Neutral Resistance and you can see that neutral point of the transformer is earthed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; text-align: justify;\"><strong>The term &#8220;Grounding&#8221;<\/strong> is used in <strong>USA and Canada<\/strong>; &#8220;<strong>Earthing&#8221;<\/strong> is used in the <strong>United Kingdom, Australia and, in general, all over the world<\/strong>. It is also the preferred term in the IEC 60364 series, but again, the meaning is exactly the same.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>[IEC 60364-5-54: 2021] <strong>541.3 Terms and definitions<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/em><em><strong>541.3.8<\/strong><strong>Earthing Conductor.<\/strong>Conductor which provides a conductive path, or part of the conductive path, between a given point in a system or in an installation or in equipment and an earth-electrode network.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>541.3.9 Main Earthing Terminal<\/strong> (main earthing busbar). Terminal or busbar which is part of the earthing arrangement of an installation and enabling the electrical connection of a number of conductors for earthing purposes<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>CONSIDERATION 2: Bonding<\/strong> is used in electrical safety standards all over the world and it means to <strong>connect two metallic parts with a PE cable.<\/strong> The primary objective of a <strong>Protective Bonding<\/strong> is to create the<strong> low impedance fault loop<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>[IEC 60204-1:2016] <strong>3 Terms, definitions and abbreviated terms<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n<em><strong>3.1.49 Protective Bonding<\/strong>. Equipotential bonding for protection against electric shock<\/em><br \/>\n<em><strong>Note 1 to entry<\/strong>: Measures for protection against electric shock can also reduce the risk of burns or fire.<\/em><br \/>\n<em><strong>Note 2 to entry:<\/strong> Protective bonding can be achieved with protective conductors and protective bonding conductors and by conductive joining of conductive parts of the machine and its electrical equipment.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Instead, the purpose of an <strong>Equipotential Bonding<\/strong> is to bring two metal parts at the same potential. For example, an Exposed and an Extraneous conductive parts.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>[IEC 60204-1:2016]\u00a0 <strong>3 Terms, definitions and abbreviated terms<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n<em><strong>3.1.26 Equipotential Bonding.<\/strong> Provision of electric connections between conductive parts, intended to achieve equipotentiality<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>CONSIDERATION 3:<\/strong> The subject seems very straighforward. In reality it is not and the reason is that important Technical Standards are not clear in their language. We take the example of the NEC (or NFPA 70). Hereafter is the definition of Equipment Grounding Conductor<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong><span class=\"c-section-detail__title \">[NFPA 70: 2023] Grounding Conductor, Equipment (EGC).<span class=\" c-code-change -addition\">\u00a0(Equipment Grounding Conductor)<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"c-section-detail-actions\">\n<div class=\"c-menu-button undefined\"><em>A conductive path(s) that is part of an effective ground-fault current path and connects normally non<span class=\" c-code-change -addition\">&#8211;<\/span>current-carrying metal parts of equipment together and to the system grounded conductor or to the grounding electrode conductor, or both. (CMP-5)<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"c-section-detail__body\">\n<div class=\"c-section-body \">\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"c-informational-note-section\"><em>Informational Note No. 1: It is recognized that the equipment grounding conductor also performs bonding.<\/em><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div>Now, in USA the TT system is forbidden; that means the PE cable must be connected between and <strong>Exposed Conductive Part and the Neutral Point of the MV\/LV transformer.<\/strong> That means the PE cable connected to an exposed conductive part is dedicated to bonding; nothing else since, for electrical safety, an Exposed Conductive Part must be bonded (to the system neutral) and not grounded! Both the NEC and the CE Code have a good definition of the Bonding Conductor:<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div><em><strong>[NFPA 70: 2023]: Bonding Conductor (Bonding Jumper).<\/strong> A conductor that ensures the required electrical conductivity between metal parto; that arc required to be electrically connected. (CMP-5)\u00a0<\/em><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"c-section-detail__body\">\n<blockquote>\n<div><em><strong>[CE Code: 2024] Bonding conductor<\/strong> \u2014 a conductor that connects the non-current-carrying parts of electrical equipment, raceways, or enclosures to the service equipment or system grounding conductor.<\/em><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div>However, in USA, the Conductor used to bond equipment is called <strong>Equipment Grounding Conductor; <\/strong>while, in reality, it should be called <strong>Equipment BONDING Conductor!<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>CONSIDERATION 4:<\/strong> In USA and Canada, the <strong>Neutral conductor<\/strong> is named <strong>Grounded Conductor<\/strong>. Hereafter its definition, followed by a statement that should clear the concept of Equipment Grounding Conductor!!<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div><em><span class=\"c-section-detail__title \"><strong>[NFPA 70: 2023] Grounded Conductor<\/strong>. <\/span>A system or circuit conductor that is intentionally grounded. A Lightning protection System (LPS) has to be earthed (or Grounded in USA and Canada) in order to disperse the lightning current safely towards earth. An electrical system is earthed (grounded) to create a TN installation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm; margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; text-align: justify;\"><strong>Bonding<\/strong> is the <strong>connection of two metal parts with a PE cable (EGC in USA)<\/strong>. The motor frame has to be bonded in order to create a low impedance fault loop path (TN systems).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In USA, the Equipment Grounding Conductor should be re-named <strong>Equipment Bonding Conductor: t<\/strong>hat will improve the understanding of Bonding and Grounding in the Code and among practitioners.<\/p>\n<\/div>            <\/div>\n        \n        \n                <div class=\"clear-both\"><\/div>\n        \n\n    <\/div>\n        <\/section>\n\n    \n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE DOUBT:&nbsp;What is the difference between Bonding, Earthing and Grounding?
