For example, the expected demand rate might be once every 20 years. Suppose that, in a specific application, a high-pressure condition requiring a safety response occurs only once every 20 years. During those 20 years, the safety loop remains essentially <em data-start=\"632\" data-end=\"641\">dormant<\/em>\u2014yet when the demand finally occurs, the system must react reliably and bring the process to a safe state.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"749\" data-end=\"1168\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gt-engineering.it\/en\/pubblications\/in-depth-articles-tuttomisure\/p1-reliability-data-for-components-used-in-safety-systems\/\">Safe failures<\/a> do not pose a problem. Dangerous detectable failures are also not an issue, as they can be identified automatically by the safety system through its built-in diagnostic test routines. The real concern lies with <strong data-start=\"974\" data-end=\"1009\">dangerous undetectable failures<\/strong>. These faults cannot be identified by the automatic diagnostics. The only way to reveal them is by performing an <strong data-start=\"1123\" data-end=\"1140\">off-line test<\/strong>, known as a <strong data-start=\"1153\" data-end=\"1167\">Proof Test<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1170\" data-end=\"1209\">Below are the two relevant definitions.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>[IEC 61508-4:2010] <em>3.8.5\u00a0 Proof Test : <\/em><\/strong><em>Periodic test performed to detect dangerous hidden failures in a safety-related system so that, if necessary, a repair can restore the system to an \u201cas new\u201d condition or as close as practical to this condition<span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\">.<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><strong>[IEC 61508-4:2010] <em>3.8.6\u00a0 Diagnostic Coverage DC :<\/em><\/strong><em> Fraction of dangerous failures detected by automatic on-line diagnostic tests. The fraction of dangerous failures is computed by using the dangerous failure rates associated with the detected dangerous failures divided by the total rate of dangerous failures.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\">In low-demand applications, the real concern is the presence of <strong data-start=\"142\" data-end=\"177\">dangerous undetectable failures<\/strong>, which can be identified only through an <strong data-start=\"219\" data-end=\"242\">off-line Proof Test<\/strong>. The execution of this test must strictly follow the procedures specified by the instrument manufacturer in the <strong data-start=\"355\" data-end=\"372\">safety manual<\/strong>. This is particularly important for devices with <strong data-start=\"422\" data-end=\"465\">complex electronics (Type B components)<\/strong>, where end users cannot reasonably determine on their own what steps are required for a proper Proof Test. Only the manufacturer is able to define the full test procedure and clarify whether the Proof Test is <strong data-start=\"675\" data-end=\"687\">complete<\/strong> (detecting approximately 100% of relevant failures) or <strong data-start=\"743\" data-end=\"754\">partial<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"757\" data-end=\"1043\">Although the Proof Test is also referenced in <strong data-start=\"803\" data-end=\"816\">IEC 62061<\/strong>, it is mainly applied in <strong data-start=\"842\" data-end=\"861\">low-demand mode<\/strong>. It is used in Low Demand Applications and it has to be performed with a frequency twice the demand upon the safety function. The reliability of a Safety subsystem is directly dependent upon the proof test interval called <em><strong>T<sub>i<\/sub><\/strong><\/em>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 113px; height: 35px;\" Test<\/strong> is an automatic test, usually performed by the functional channel of the Safety System and it allows the detection of the Detectable failures.\u00a0 In case of single channels in series, with diagnostic coverage, the reliability of the whole safety system depends upon such a parameter with the following formula (1oo1D or Architecture C according to IEC 62061):<\/span><\/p>\n<p
