<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>            <\/div>\n        \n        \n                <div class=\"clear-both\"><\/div>\n        \n\n    <\/div>\n        <\/section>\n\n    \n\n\n\n\n    \n        <section\n            data-name=\"Contenuto testuale con immagine\"\n            class=\"bow-gte-testo-media u-spacer-base\"\n            id=\"\"\n        >\n            \n<div class=\"o-text-media px-side-spacer sm:px-side-spacer-sm lg:px-side-spacer-tablet 2xl:px-side-spacer-desktop flex flex-wrap items-start md:block\">\n\n    \n                    <div class=\"mb-6 relative w-full md:mb-4 lg:mb-8 xl:mb-9\">\n                \n        <div                class=\"m-headings\"\n            >\n    \n    \n<h4 class=\"a-heading text-primary font-heading text-2xl lg:text-3xl xl:text-4xl normal mt-2 first:mt-0\">\n                    Principles    <\/h4>\n        <\/div>\n                <\/div>\n        \n        \n                    <div class=\"relative w-full\">\n                \n<div class=\"a-text font-text text-base normal mt-8 first:mt-0 space-y-4\">\n    <p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"margin:0cm 0cm 8pt;text-align:justify;\">International Technical Standards are important since they are recognised as complying with the following principles:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type:square\">\n<li style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt 36pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"margin:0cm 0cm 8pt;text-align:justify;\">transparency<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt 36pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"margin:0cm 0cm 8pt;text-align:justify;\">openness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt 36pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"margin:0cm 0cm 8pt;text-align:justify;\">impartiality and consensus<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt 36pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"margin:0cm 0cm 8pt;text-align:justify;\">relevance and effectiveness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt 36pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"margin:0cm 0cm 8pt;text-align:justify;\">coherence<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"margin:0cm 0cm 8pt;text-align:justify;\">ISO and IEC are the two widely recognised international standardisation bodies. In USA, instead, there are many standardisation private companies. That is (one of the many) reasons ANSI exists: to give those companies the recognition of those principles. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>            <\/div>\n        \n        \n                <div class=\"clear-both\"><\/div>\n        \n\n    <\/div>\n        <\/section>\n\n    \n\n\n\n\n    \n        <section\n            data-name=\"Contenuto testuale con immagine\"\n            class=\"bow-gte-testo-media u-spacer-base\"\n            id=\"\"\n        >\n            \n<div class=\"o-text-media px-side-spacer sm:px-side-spacer-sm lg:px-side-spacer-tablet 2xl:px-side-spacer-desktop flex flex-wrap items-start md:block\">\n\n    \n                    <div class=\"mb-6 relative w-full md:mb-4 lg:mb-8 xl:mb-9\">\n                \n        <div                class=\"m-headings\"\n            >\n    \n    \n<h4 class=\"a-heading text-primary font-heading text-2xl lg:text-3xl xl:text-4xl font-normal mt-2 first:mt-0\">\n                    Terminology    <\/h4>\n        <\/div>\n                <\/div>\n        \n        \n                    <div class=\"relative w-full\">\n                \n<div class=\"a-text font-text text-base normal mt-8 first:mt-0 space-y-4\">\n    <p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; text-align: justify;\">But let\u2019s now focus on the terminology used in the documents. Technical standards give both requirements (obligations) and recommendations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0<em><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">[<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\"><b>ISO\/IEC Directives, Part 2, Ninth edition, 2021<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">]:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; text-align: justify;\">\u201c3.3.3 <strong>Requirement.<\/strong> Expression in the content of a document conveying objectively verifiable criteria to be fulfilled and from which no deviation is permitted if compliance with the document is to be claimed.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; text-align: justify;\">\u201c3.3.4<strong> Recommendation<\/strong>. Expression in the content of a document conveying a suggested possible choice or course of action deemed to be particularly suitable without necessarily mentioning or excluding others\u201d.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><span style=\"text-align: justify;\">The requirements are not expressed with the verb \u201cmust\u201d or \u201chave to\u201d but \u201cshall\u201d. Here are all the nuances:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: square;\">\n<li style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt 36pt;\"><span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><span style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>&#8220;shall&#8221; <\/strong>indicates a\u00a0<strong>requirement<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt 36pt;\"><span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><span style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>&#8220;should&#8221;<\/strong> indicates a\u00a0<strong>recommendation<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt 36pt;\"><span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><span style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;may&#8221; is used to indicate that something is permitted<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt 36pt;\"><span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><span style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;can&#8221; is used to indicate that something is possible, for example, that an organization or individual is able to do something<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; text-align: justify;\">Here some examples of <strong>Requirements<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><span style=\"text-align: justify;\">In Section 14<em> &#8220;Grounding &#8211; General&#8221;<\/em> of UL 508A, Article 14.1 states:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; text-align: justify;\">14.1 An industrial control panel <strong>shall <\/strong>have provision for grounding all noncurrent carrying metal parts that are exposed or that are able to be contacted by persons during normal operation or adjustment of the equipment and that are able to become energized due to a breakdown of insulation, loose wiring connection, or electrical disturbance. Grounding (bonding) braids <strong>shall <\/strong>be listed according to UL 467 and sized according to 15.1.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><span style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the following example the difference between\u00a0requirements (indicated by shall) and\u00a0recommendation (indicated by should) is clearly noticeable.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; text-align: justify;\">In Section 6.3.3.2 <em>&#8220;<strong>Requirements<\/strong> for guards&#8221;<\/em> of EN ISO 12100, Article 6.3.3.2.1 <em>&#8220;<strong>Requirements<\/strong> for fixed guards&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>states:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; text-align: justify;\">Fixed guards <strong>shall <\/strong>be securely held in place either<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; text-align: justify;\">&#8211; permanently (for example by welding), or<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; text-align: justify;\">&#8211; by means of fasteners (screws, nuts) making removal\/opening impossible without using tools; they<strong> should <\/strong>not remain closed without their fasteners (see ISO 14120).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><span style=\"text-align: justify;\">In Section 7 <em>&#8220;Instruction handbook, maintenance and cleaning&#8221;<\/em> of\u00a0EN ISO 14159, Article 7.1\u00a0<em>&#8220;Instruction handbook&#8221;<\/em> states:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; text-align: justify;\">Information <strong>shall<\/strong> be provided so that, after the machinery is installed, it maintains its hygienic integrity (e.g. drainability) and there is adequate access for servicing and cleaning.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; text-align: justify;\">Measures <strong>shall<\/strong> be described on the use of the machinery so that, when used correctly, the product is not exposed to factors that can lead to contamination. Requirements for monitoring and control of critical hygiene parts <strong>shall<\/strong> be identified.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><span style=\"text-align: justify;\">And here some examples of <strong>recommendations <\/strong>(non-compulsory statements):<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; text-align: justify;\">In the following example the difference\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><span style=\"text-align: justify;\">between\u00a0requirement\u00a0and\u00a0recommendation is even more emphasized since the reccomendation (should) is included in an informational note.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; text-align: justify;\">In Article 517<em> &#8220;Health Care Facilities&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>of National Electrical Code 2020 (NEC), Section 517.42 (E) <em>&#8220;Receptacle Identification&#8221; <\/em>states:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; text-align: justify;\">The electrical receptacles or the cover plates for the electrical receptacles supplied from the life safety or equipment branches shall have a distinctive color or marking so as to be readily identificable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; text-align: justify;\">Informational note: If color is used to identify these receptacles, the same color <strong>should<\/strong> be used throughout the facility.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; text-align: justify;\">In<span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; text-align: justify;\">\u00a0Article 430<em> &#8220;Motors, Motor Circuits, and Controllers&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>of National Electrical Code 2020 (NEC), Section 430.126\u00a0(A) <em>&#8220;Motor Overtemperature Protection&#8221; <\/em>states:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; text-align: justify;\">Adjustable-speed drive systems shall protect against motor overtemperature conditions where the motor is \u00a0not rated to operate at the nameplate rated current over the speed range required by the application. Protection shall be provided by one of the following means. [&#8230;]<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><span style=\"text-align: justify;\">For motors that utilize external forced air or liquid cooling systems, overtemperature can occur if the cooling system is not operating. Although this issue is not unique to adjustable speed applications, externally cooled motors are most often encountered with such applications. In these instances, overtemperature protection using direct temperature sensing is recommended or additional means <strong>should<\/strong> be provided to ensure that the cooling system is operating (flow or pressure sensing, interlocking of adjustable-speed drive system and cooling system, etc.).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><span style=\"text-align: justify;\">In Section 5.3\u00a0<em>&#8220;Normal conditions for tests&#8221;<\/em> of\u00a0<\/span><\/span>IEC 60079-29-1<span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><span style=\"text-align: justify;\">, Article 5.3.2\u00a0<em>&#8220;Test gas(es)&#8221;<\/em> states:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The flammable gas(es) to be used in a mixture with clean air for initial and all subsequent tests shall be selected in accordance with a) to d) with decreasing priority.<\/p>\n<p>a) The specific gas for equipment intended for sensing a single flammable gas only.\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; text-align: justify;\">[&#8230;]<\/span><\/p>\n<p>d)\u00a0A gas from the manufacturer&#8217;s list of flammable gases for which the equipment is claimed to be suitable. The choice of this gas <strong>should<\/strong> be made by agreement between the manufacturer and the test laboratory.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt; text-align: justify;\">Finally, it is important to understand three other terms used:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><span style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Certification<\/strong>: It is the provision by an independent body of written assurance (a certificate) that the product, service or system meets specific requirements. Certification is also known as <strong>third party conformity assessment<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><span style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Testing<\/strong>: Testing is the determination of one or more of an object or product\u2019s characteristics and is usually performed by a laboratory.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><span style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Inspection<\/strong>: Inspection describes the regular checking of a product to make sure it meets specified criteria.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>            <\/div>\n        \n        \n                <div class=\"clear-both\"><\/div>\n        \n\n    <\/div>\n
