High voltage electrical gears&nbsp;are usually switchgears. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-align:justify;\">Also low voltage panels can be in the form of Switchgears. In general these types of panels are&nbsp;<\/span>used in powering&nbsp;transformers, motors, transmission lines, generators and power networks for industrial, household, commercial and distribution systems. Their&nbsp;purpose is to supply and control power to loads while also protecting them. A switchgear is also useful in identifying fault conditions and cutting off the power supply by disconnecting and isolating it from the circuit. Here the definition:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">[IEV ref 441-11-02] <strong>Switchgear.<\/strong> A&nbsp;general term covering switching devices and their combination with associated control, measuring, protective and regulating equipment, also assemblies of such devices and equipment with associated interconnections, accessories, enclosures and supporting structures, intended in principle for use in connection with generation, transmission, distribution and conversion of electric energy.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-align:justify;\">Low voltage Switchgears can be built and tested according to the following USA standards:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-align:justify;\"><strong>&#8211; UL&nbsp;1558.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/span>Standard for Metal-Enclosed Low-Voltage Power Circuit Breaker Switchgear.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-align:justify;\"><strong>&#8211; ANSI&nbsp;C37.20.1.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/span>IEEE Standard For Metal-Enclosed Low-Voltage (1000 Vac And Below, 3200 Vdc And Below) Power Circuit Breaker Switchgear.<span style=\"text-align:justify;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-align:justify;\"><strong>&#8211; NEMA&nbsp;SG-5. <\/strong>Power Switchgear Assemblies<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-align:justify;\">Switchgears may include <strong>any combination of protective devices<\/strong> including insulated case circuit breakers (ICCB), molded case circuit breakers (MCCB) listed in UL-489, fuses&nbsp;listed in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gt-engineering.it\/en\/technical-standards\/ul-and-nfpa-standards\/ul-508a\/\">UL-508<\/a> and UL-977 and power circuit breakers listed in UL-1066. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Looking at the <strong>IEC standards<\/strong>, low voltage switchgears are built according to IEC 61439 series. <strong>IEC 61439-1:<\/strong> Low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies.&nbsp;The standard also includes Motor control Centers, called, in general, Controlgears. Here the definition<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">IEC 61439-1] 3.1.1&nbsp;<strong>Low-voltage switchgear and controlgear Assembly<\/strong>. Combination of one or more low-voltage switching devices together with associated control,&nbsp;measuring, signalling, protective, regulating equipment, with all the internal electrical and&nbsp;mechanical interconnections and structural parts, as defined by the original manufacturer,&nbsp;which can be assembled in accordance with the original manufacturer&rsquo;s style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>S<\/strong><span style=\"text-align:justify;\"><strong>witchboards<\/strong> are typically down stream of switchgears, at lower voltages, generally <strong>equal or less&nbsp;than 600 V<\/strong>, and they are <\/span>used to distribute power to multiple sources and transmitting it to individual loads, panel boards and control equipment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-align:justify;\">The terminology is used more in North America than&nbsp;in Europe.&nbsp;Switchboards are built and tested according to:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-align:justify;\">&#8211;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gt-engineering.it\/en\/technical-standards\/ul-and-nfpa-standards\/ul-891-switchboards\/\">UL-891<\/a>:&nbsp;Switchboards. That is a tri-standard, including <strong>C22.2 N&deg;244<\/strong> in Canada and&nbsp;NMX-J-118\/2-ANCE.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-align:justify;\">&#8211; NEMA PB-2:&nbsp;Deadfront Distribution Switchboards.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">[UL 891] 3.46 <strong>Switchboard<\/strong>: a large single panel, structural frame or assembly of panels or structural frames&nbsp;on which may be mounted, on the face or back or both: switches, overcurrent, and other protective&nbsp;devices, buses, and instruments.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-align:justify;\">Switchboards incorporates only <strong>low-voltage power circuit breakers<\/strong> (LVPCB) which are listed in UL-1066 and conform with ANSI C37.13 and NEMA SG-3. They can also include UL 489 Circuit Breakers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:7.5pt; text-align:justify; margin:0cm 0cm 8pt\"><span style=\"text-align:justify;\">In switchboards the protective devices may be <strong>group-mounted or individually compartmented<\/strong>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-align:justify;\">&#8211; individually compartmented switchboards have each breaker positioned behind its own door and barrier-isolated from surrounding devices;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-align:justify;\">&#8211; some switchboards may incorporate a combination of individually mounted as well as group mounted protective devices. The apparatus designed for this function is the motor control center (MCC). Each <strong>MCC drawer<\/strong> contains a disconnecting switch to isolate the motor circuit, fuses or&nbsp;circuit breakers to provide short-circuit protection, overload relays or thermal protection&nbsp;to protect the motor&nbsp;and a contactor or a solid-state motor controller.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"margin-bottom:7.5pt;margin:0cm 0cm 8pt;text-align:justify;\">Therefore a MCC cannot be considered as a switchboard because switchboards are supposed to contain circuit breakers only and not motor contactors (IEC terminology) or motor controllers (USA terminology).
