Industrial machinery with safety interlock circuits shall have surge protection installed.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:20px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gt-engineering.it\/en\/technical-standards\/ul-and-nfpa-standards\/industrial-machinery\/\"><strong>NFPA 79<\/strong><\/a> team introduced the following language in the 2018 edition:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:20px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\"><i>7.8.1 Surge-Protective Devices (SPDs). SPDs shall be provided for industrial machinery with safety interlock circuits to protect against the effects of overvoltages due to lightning or switching surges.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:20px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">There were discussions in the October 2018 STP annual meeting of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gt-engineering.it\/en\/technical-standards\/ul-and-nfpa-standards\/ul-508a\/\">UL 508A<\/a> in Chicago and <strong>we all agreed that the requirement does not have objective evidence to be supported<\/strong>. Therefore nothing was added in the UL standard, and that is reflected in the 2020 update, where nothing is stated about the need of SPDs in case of Safety interlocks.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:20px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\"><strong>In Canada<\/strong>, that language was never used in any standard&nbsp;dealing with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gt-engineering.it\/en\/technical-standards\/ul-and-nfpa-standards\/ul-508a\/\">Industrial Control Panels<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:20px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">During the two annual meetings of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gt-engineering.it\/en\/technical-standards\/ul-and-nfpa-standards\/industrial-machinery\/\">NFPA 79<\/a>, the first in Jan 2018 in Savannah and the second in Jan 2019 in New Orleans, the team agreed the statement had to be revised. Therefore, i<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size:20px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">n the&nbsp;<strong>NFPA 79, 2021 edition,<\/strong> the following languare is present:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:20px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\"><i>[NFPA 79: 2021] <strong>7.8.1 Surge-Protective Devices (SPDs)<\/strong><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:20px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\"><i>Industrial Machinery with safety circuits not effectively protected from the effects of overvoltages due to lightning or switching surges shall have surge protection installed. <\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:20px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\"><i><strong>Exception: SPDs shall not be required<\/strong> where the risks associated with the effects of overvoltages are mitigated such that the safety performance determined by a risk assessment is met.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>            <\/div>\n        \n        \n                <div class=\"clear-both\"><\/div>\n        \n\n    <\/div>\n        <\/section>\n\n    \n\n\n\n\n    \n        <section\n            data-name=\"Contenuto testuale con immagine\"\n            class=\"bow-gte-testo-media u-spacer-base\"\n            id=\"\"\n        >\n            \n<div class=\"o-text-media px-side-spacer sm:px-side-spacer-sm lg:px-side-spacer-tablet 2xl:px-side-spacer-desktop flex flex-wrap items-start md:block\">\n\n    \n                    <div class=\"mb-6 relative w-full md:mb-4 lg:mb-8 xl:mb-9\">\n                \n        <div                class=\"m-headings\"\n            >\n    \n    \n<h4 class=\"a-heading text-primary font-heading text-2xl lg:text-3xl xl:text-4xl normal mt-2 first:mt-0\">\n                    Conclusion    <\/h4>\n        <\/div>\n                <\/div>\n        \n        \n                    <div class=\"relative w-full\">\n                \n<div class=\"a-text font-text text-base normal mt-8 first:mt-0 space-y-4\">\n    <p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:20px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">Overvoltages are one of the risks a control panel, as well as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gt-engineering.it\/en\/insights\/ul-and-csa-conformity\/switchgears-switchboards-and-motor-control-centers-not-the-same-stuff\/\">switchgear<\/a>, can be subjected. Considerations have to be given about the maximum impulse voltage Uimp a panel can be subject&nbsp;to, without being damaged. Uimp is one of the interface parameters required by IEC 61439-1. That concept is not in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gt-engineering.it\/en\/technical-standards\/ul-and-nfpa-standards\/\">North American Standards<\/a> and that causes statements like the one written in the 2018 edition of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gt-engineering.it\/en\/technical-standards\/ul-and-nfpa-standards\/industrial-machinery\/\"> NFPA 79<\/a>. <strong>That was never really enforced by the Authorities Having Jurisdiction and the approach was corrected in the new edition of the standard<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:20px;\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri,sans-serif\">In our opinion, the best solution is to state the panel Uimp, in the same way as we state the Panel SCCR.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>            <\/div>\n        \n        \n                <div class=\"clear-both\"><\/div>\n        \n\n    <\/div>\n        <\/section>\n\n    \n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Are SPDs mandatory in Industrial Control Panels?
