first:mt-0 space-y-4\">\n    <p>Two major international standards support the use of \u2018Zero Energy\u2019 to reduce risk in machinery.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>ISO 14118: Safety of machinery \u2013 Prevention of unexpected start-up (Latest edition: 2017)<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>ANSI ASSE Z244.1: The Control of Hazardous Energy Lockout, Tagout and Alternative Methods (Latest edition: 2016)<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cHazardous energy\u201d refers to energies generated by electricity, pneumatics, hydraulics, gravity, chemistry, combustion gases (methane), etc.<\/p>\n<\/div>            <\/div>\n        \n        \n                <div class=\"clear-both\"><\/div>\n        \n\n    <\/div>\n        <\/section>\n\n    \n\n\n\n\n    \n        <section\n mt-2 first:mt-0\">\n                    The principle of &#8220;Zero Energy&#8221;    <\/h4>\n        <\/div>\n                <\/div>\n        \n        \n                    <div class=\"relative w-full\">\n                \n<div class=\"a-text font-text text-base normal mt-8 first:mt-0 space-y-4\">\n    <p>The zero energy principle is simple: when one needs access to a segregated (dangerous) area of a machine, one must isolate and dissipate all energy and prevent another person from re-energising it by installing a lockout. Then place a tag in order to be easily contacted (tagout). Finally, before starting with the operation, make sure that the part to be operated on has been de-energised (testout).<\/p>\n<p>In countries such as the USA, Canada and the UK, Social Law require the application of this technique. This makes the application of Lockout-Tagout very widespread in these countries.<\/p>\n<p>In many other European countries this methodology is indicated in the technical regulations (which are not mandatory). This makes Lockout-Tagout more of an exception than a rule.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>            <\/div>\n        \n        \n                <div class=\"clear-both\"><\/div>\n        \n\n    <\/div>\n        <\/section>\n\n    \n\n\n\n\n    \n        <section\n            data-name=\"Contenuto testuale con immagine\"\n            class=\"bow-gte-testo-media u-spacer-base\"\n            id=\"\"\n        >\n            \n<div class=\"o-text-media px-side-spacer sm:px-side-spacer-sm lg:px-side-spacer-tablet 2xl:px-side-spacer-desktop flex flex-wrap items-start md:block\">\n\n    \n                    <div class=\"mb-6 relative w-full md:mb-4 lg:mb-8 xl:mb-9\">\n                \n        <div                class=\"m-headings\"\n            >\n    \n    \n<h4 class=\"a-heading text-primary font-heading text-2xl lg:text-3xl xl:text-4xl font-normal mt-2 first:mt-0\">\n                    Alternative methods    <\/h4>\n        <\/div>\n                <\/div>\n        \n        \n                    <div class=\"relative w-full\">\n                \n<div class=\"a-text font-text text-base normal mt-8 first:mt-0 space-y-4\">\n    <p>Lockout-Tagout cannot always be used. Consider, for example, access to a hazardous area where a robot has to be programmed by means of a hand-held hand control.<\/p>\n<p>In this case, the operator must rely on the fact that all movements are stopped by a safety loop (interlocks, safety logic, contactors, actuators) that must comply with EN ISO 13849 or other functional safety standards.<\/p>\n<p>This is just one example. There are other methods that ensure an adequate level of safety, provided a proper risk analysis has been carried out first.<\/p>\n<p>This approach is called \u2018alternative methods\u2019 in the Z244.1 standard. This is what is stated in the standard:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Lockout or tagout shall be used unless the user can demonstrate an alternative method will\u00a0<\/em><em>provide effective protection for persons. When lockout or tagout is not used, then alternative<\/em><br \/>\n<em>methods shall be used only after the hazards have been assessed and risks documented.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This approach is called \u2018Other measures to prevent unexpected start-up\u2019 in the ISO 14118 standard. Below is what is stated in the standard.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Where the risk assessment shows that isolation and energy dissipation are not appropriate for an intervention (e.g. manual loading\/unloading) , the following measures necessary to prevent unexpected start-up shall be taken as appropriate:<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 measures taken in the control system to prevent the generation of start commands from unintended<br \/>\nactuations of a start control device or other parts (e.g. sensors, power control elements) , from failures<br \/>\nin or from external influences (vibration, shocks, disturbances of the power supply) (see 6.2);<br \/>\n\u2013 measures taken at level A, B or C of the machine (see Figure 1) or at mechanical disconnection<br \/>\nelements or at moving-parts (immobilization) , to prevent unintended start commands resulting in<br \/>\nan unexpected start-up;<br \/>\n-measures implemented in the control system to automatically stop the hazard-generating part of<br \/>\nthe machine before a hazardous event can arise from an unexpected\/unintended start-up of this<br \/>\npart.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img
