Machinery Safety in Canada: Main Reference Technical standards and Codes
All you need to know about field evaluation of electrical equipment according to SPE-1000-21 Model Code.
For Machineries to be sold in Canada the first edition of a new standard was published in December 2016.
C22.2 N°301: Industrial electrical machinery
Let's distinguish immediately between electrical equipment and interconnections and industrial control panels: from January 2022, C22.2 N°286 becomes the reference Standard for the compliance of industrial control panels in Canada, the equivalent of UL 508A for the USA. Il CE Code, or Canadian Electrical Code Part I, or CSA C22.1 is the reference standard for the electrical installations in Canada. In Italy the equivalent standard is derived from IEC 60364 and is called CEI 64-8. Based upon the CE Code, each canadian province publish its own electrial standard or Amendments to that main reference.

The Standard covers switchboards. The equivalent European standards are EN IEC 61439-1 and EN IEC 61439-2, but the approach is different. EN IEC 61439 puts a lot of emphasis on design verification and testing of the switchgear whereas UL 891 is primarily focused on how to design switchgear.

From January 2022 C22.2 N°286 becomes the reference Standard for the conformity of industrial control panels in Canada, the equivalent of UL 508A for USA.
In the past the reference Standard was C22.2 N°14: Industrial control equipment. But that is not really a Standard for the conformity of control panels of machinery, since it was written for the conformity of electrical components like contactors (manual motor controllers in North American technical language).
On October 25, 2016, the third edition of Canadian Standard Z432 on safeguarding of machinery was published.
It is the reference Standard for the Assessment and Reduction of Risk due to hazards of mechanical nature. Inside this Standard there is also a set of regulations inspired by EN ISO technical Standards.
For the first time, the use of EN ISO13849 for the functional safety of control systems is made official.
